Overview

Cricket Australia captures consent from participants under 18 years old (and their parent/guardian) to film and live stream cricket matches.

The objective of collecting consent (or withdrawal of consent) at the time of registration is to enable clubs and participants feel safe when participating in a match that is being livestreamed knowing there are appropriate measures in place.

Consent is only required for participants who are under 18 years old at their registration date. Participants who are 18 years or older are automatically eligible for filming and streaming and cannot opt out via PlayHQ.

This guide explains how the consent system works and where you can manage consent settings.

During registration

Setting video consent preferences

Video consent options will appear during registration for any participant under 18 years old.

  1. Complete participant details
    1. Navigate through the registration process as usual
    2. Fill out or update your participant information
    3. Locate the 'Video Consent' section in the registration form
  2. Choose video consent option
    1. Select 'Yes' to allow the participant under 18 years old to appear in live streams and recordings (this is the default setting)
    2. Select 'No' to opt the participant under 18 years old out of all filming and streaming
    3. Complete and submit your registration

⚠️ Important: The default setting is 'Yes' - consent is automatically granted unless you specifically select 'No'

After registration

Updating consent preferences

You can change consent preferences at any time through your PlayHQ profile, but only while the participant remains under 18 years old.

  1. Access your profile
    1. Log into your PlayHQ account
    2. Select your initials to navigate My Profile, where your dependents under 18 years old are listed
    3. Select your dependent under 18 years old from within your profile
    4. Scroll to the 'Video Consent' section in your dependent's Profile tab
  1. Update your choice
    1. Select 'Yes' to allow video streaming
    2. Select 'No' to opt out of all video streaming
    3. Click Save Changes

The system will record your updated decision and this will display straight away.

When participants turn 18

Once a participant reaches 18 years old:

  • Their consent status will need manual updating to 'Yes' if they want to be eligible for streaming during their current season
  • When they register for the following season, their consent automatically becomes 'Yes'
  • Adult participants cannot opt out of video streaming within their PlayHQ profile

Understanding the impact

What video consent covers

When you select 'Yes':

  • Your child can appear in live streams of matches
  • Your child can be included in recorded match footage
  • No restrictions apply to their participation in streamed games

When you select 'No':

  • Club/Association will be informed of the preference for your child not to appear in livestreaming and the livestream for the match may be abandoned

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my consent decision after registration? Yes, you can update consent preferences at any time through your PlayHQ profile settings, but only while the participant remains under 18 years old. Once they turn 18, they're automatically eligible for streaming.

What happens if I say 'No' but later want to allow streaming? You can change from 'No' to 'Yes' at any time through your profile settings. The change takes effect immediately for future matches and streaming.

Will my child still be able to play if I select 'No'? Absolutely. Selecting 'No' for video consent has no impact on your participant's ability to play cricket or participate in competitions. It only affects whether they can appear in video content.

Parents and guardians who do not wish for their child to be photographed or included in live-streamed content are strongly encouraged to communicate their preferences directly to the relevant club representatives.

Do I need to provide consent every season? Your consent preference carries over between seasons until you change it or until the participant turns 18. You only need to actively update it if you want to change your decision.

What if I'm not sure whether to provide consent? The default setting is 'Yes', which allows your participant to appear in streams and recordings. You can always change this decision later through your profile if your circumstances change or if you have concerns.

To help you make an informed decision:

  • For Junior matches: Default to unlisted on YouTube, accessible via a shared link provided by the hosting club. Also viewable through the Play Cricket app and website. Hosting clubs may adjust the stream to be publicly discoverable on YouTube.
  • For Senior matches: These streams are available on YouTube and the PlayCricket app and website.
  • If opting out ('No'): Club/Association will be informed of the preference for your child not to appear in livestreaming and the livestream for the match may be abandoned.

Can adult players (18+) opt out of being filmed? No, participants who are 18 years or older cannot opt out of filming and live streaming. Please connect with your relevant club representative to discuss your needs.
